Life Giver

Life Giver is Inspired from Peter Paul Rubens’ Descent from the Cross. Just as Christ became the Savior, the woman represents strength and nurturing in the world. As Stephen Knudsen states, “there is an important quality of intensity that holds great power in perceptional shifting"[1] and for me it lies in the ambiguity that appears through different interpretations.

Though the work meets Western Classical Standards there is an extension within the unattached canvas that leans toward an earthiness in Wabi Sabi ideals of beauty. Breaking the rule of odds, the figure is adorned and balanced by eight circular symbols, not as perfect ratios. Instead, they offer complexity in texture and value, adding contrasting effects to form unity. Thin African symbols, twisting and turning speak for the ram’s horns as strength and humility. The circular arrangement resembles the placement of subjects within the armature of Rubens’ baroque style painting. However, pulling attention to the subject introduces the Rule of Odds into the upper right and lower left of the composition where groups of threes create interest floating in air.

The claylike emerge of woman’s face is naturally flawed, balancing nature and oneirism. Eyes shut, while in her thoughts, baring shades of the earth as a life force. Directional air bellows through the baroque line creating a repelling effect which follows suit introducing rhythmic patterns. The beauty of tonal merging, embraces the subject floating backward in a saturated pool of love in wrapped folds in the unity of atmospheric green.
